Rhys

Well, a little while ago I received an email from someone I used to go to Uni with. She is now teaching at a local secondary school and had one student in mind when I received the following email – “I have a wonderful student doing his GCSE fashion and he has just done an art piece inspired by you!! He found you online and nearly died of excitement when I said I knew you. Would you come in for one of our lessons and draw with him or chat with him about his project?!? If can work something out that’s be so good!” Of course I said yes! On Monday I popped down to surprise this lovely young man during his Textile class. I was stood looking at the wall displays when he walked in, his teacher then said, “Rhys, looks who’s here…” and as I turned round this enthusiastic young man squealed with excitement (and shock haha) then once he caught his breath, turned and ran out of the room saying he was going to get his Art work… Returning slightly shell shocked a little later he showed me through his work including some really good studies of my recent prints. It was so humbling to see someone so inspired by my art, he was so excited to see me and it was infectious…. We talked though his drawings and collages and his ideas for his textile piece and I was able to offer my advice and little hints. We also did a bit of drawing together and I sketched a quick portrait of Rhys for him to keep! It was honestly such a fun experience and one I wont forget! I let Rhys choose one of my prints to keep and he also asked to keep my pencil which I loved… May it bring you lots of success young man!! Rhys emailed me later in the day thanking for me for the visit – “Thank you so much for coming in today it has been the best day ever for me so glad I met you, just a shame that it went to quickly can’t wait to see you again!” What a cutie! I also got a chance to chat to a few of the other girls in the class and hopefully I’ll be be able to get the chance to go back and see their end of year shows! Here are a couple of...

Summer Fashion School – 2/6

Summer Fashion School – 2/6

Well, week 2 done. I honestly cannot believe how quickly an hour goes by when we’re working together, if only they went that quick when I’m at work! haha So this week we concentrated on illustration and finalising the collection. Summer is already a keen illustrator so I think she enjoyed this week, she did really well. I gave Summer a selection of templates to choose from to help her make her drawings look like a collection, After a few examples and handy tips she started to draw her designs using the silhouette under the paper. Once that was complete we started adding some colour using ProMarkers. I adore these pens and their watercolour-esq finish. I use them for my illustrations and Summer liked working with them too which is a bonus. Finally some detail was added to the illustration using a black fine-liner. I’m so impressed with Summer and what she created… I took loads of snaps this week so will put them all below… what do you think? I think she did so well!! In case anyone else is interested in my freelance teaching please get in touch. I have a Pttls qualification and am Arts award trained for Discover, Explore, Bronze and Silver. I also have a full CRB check and have done disability training. I am keen to undertake more freelance teaching work and really enjoy these sessions! Wouldn’t it be fun if one day I could do this all the time! Enjoy the rest of your week and we’ll be back next week when we start playing around with...

Proud

A little while back I worked with 12 kids from Priory School, an inner city struggling school. The project was part of a bigger project called Strong Voices funded by Artswork… the focus… getting young people into some kind of a cultural activity of some kind, getting their bronze art award along the way. I was asked to lead the project, each young person would get a duffle coat which they could customise after an inspiration trip to the naval museum and behind the scene attic space. Well, the project finished a while ago but today I got to watch the kids model their designs in a professional photoshoot on board the Victory at the Historic Dockyard in Portsmouth. I also got to meet Mark Smith from Gloverall which was pretty cool… It’s been lovely to see their designs evolve and grow and their designs are pretty cool, the Gloverall staff, in fact everyone was pretty impressed. Me… I was proud. I’ll post some pics...

A Family Occasion

Posted by on Mar 3, 2014

So I spent the weekend doing something I enjoyed incredibly. I got to hang out with the family and create the most special nursery for my first ever niece. It was so lovely and meant alot to be able to do this for her and my bro and sis in law. Everyone loved it and the feedback so far has been fantastic. I would so LOVE to do more of this as part of Mia Mai…. Would you or would you know anyone who would be interested in commissioning something like this? How much would you consider paying? We had a few extra helping hands with this but finished easily in a day and half, so for me on my own, for a mural this size, you’d be looking at 2/2.5days…. Let me know, any advice on this would be much appreciated… I know what my standard day rate is, but I’m not sure if this would out me over budget for many people!? Anyway… lets share some...

Absence…

Absence…

It seems ages since I’ve checked in here. January has been a busy month for me… Although I am still yet to do a website page on it, you may or may not know that I freelance teach creative workshops in my spare time and am currently in the midst of 2 exciting projects with the Historic Dockyard in Portsmouth. I’m doing a project with 14 kids from Priory Secondary school in Portsmouth looking at customising the humble duffle coat. The second is with 2 infant/junior schools in Gosport, Siskin & Gomer. We’re using naval uniform & ships badges as inspiration for a project called ‘who do you think you are’. I’m enjoying immensely my time on these 2 projects and would ideally love to be able to just do freelance teaching along side Mia Mai. I will (I promise) get round to updating the workshop page on the website some time soon. I have done so many projects I’m proud of that I want to share with you all. And in the same breath, if you are a school, group etc who would be interested in hiring me for a creative workshop or event, just send me an email, I would love to...
