A Moment In Time

I am honoured to have just completed another fantastic project with the National Museum of the Royal Navy. The Project, ‘A Moment in Time’ was inspired by HMS Victory and I got the chance to work with year 3 & 4 of Arc Dickens School, a Portsmouth School which I hadn’t had the opportunity to work with before. Inspired by the signal flags which the Navy used to send messages to each other the children got a chance to design and make their own signal flag using their name or initials. Rather then just using fabric paint we decided to use batik, a process where hot liquid wax is applied to fabric to create a resist. This was a big deal, 30 children and 6 pots of hot wax could have been a disaster, luckily we had no incidents and all the children throughly enjoyed the opportunity to have a go at such an unusual textile technique. This is a school where Art is something they rarely get an opportunity to enjoy so it was wonderful being able to go in and deliver such a fantastic project which I know they all loved so much. In addition to the signal flags the children also made ‘Sailor Keepsakes’, a small keyring/bag charm/dream catcher which was made from the practice samples of batik made on day one. These Sailor Keepsakes were something that the children got to keep for themselves. The signal flags were all combined and appliqued on to three 6ft tall banner flags which the school get keep as a legacy of the project. All of the artwork went on show at The Sea Life Roadshow, a free family event at Buckland Community Centre last week and looked fantastic!! Here are a few photos which I snapped throughout the project. If you’d like to find out more about the freelance teaching work I do, please get in touch – ami@miamai.co.uk....
